Today, we examine a notable request for a presidential pardon, initiated by the family of Marcus Garvey, a trailblazing figure in the early 20th-century Black Freedom movement, whose influence resonated globally among civil rights activists. In the 1920s, FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover targeted Garvey due to his prominent role in the Pan-African movement. Convicted of mail fraud in 1923, Garvey was sentenced to five years in prison, a verdict that effectively dismantled his political movement and ultimately led to his deportation to Jamaica. We speak with Marcus Garvey’s son, Dr. Julius Garvey, who is at the forefront of the Justice4Garvey campaign.
